About the presenters:

Yolanda Hart Stevens:

Connections to Holistic Material: Native Culture Today and Tomorrow

Join Yolanda Hart Stevens as she talks about water, land, and the environmental challenges impacting Native communities. From birth to death, the mesquite tree is an integral part of life for many who call the desert home. The mesquite tree is just one of many holistic materials, elements of our natural environment, that are vital to sustaining Native culture and practices. But climate change and environmental degradation are changing the landscapes of Arizona. From the lack of water resources to the loss of mesquite trees, the future is uncertain.

Dave Showalter

Author Dave Showalter will present his latest book, Living River: The Promise of the Mighty Colorado. This visually arresting and galvanizing portrayal of the living Colorado River and the challenges it faces engages and inspires readers on an epic watershed journey that celebrates life, beauty, and resilience.

As the seven states of the century-old Colorado River Compact renegotiate the river’s management guidelines, which expire in 2026, Living River takes readers on a journey through the endangered Colorado River from source to sea, and illustrates how we can create a resilient watershed by changing our relationship with water.

Featuring stunning photography and powerful essays, Living River captures breathtaking landscapes rich with wildlife, from the upper Colorado’s tributary Fraser River to the southwestern Gila and San Pedro Rivers. Along the way, Showalter weaves in the stories of riverkeepers who work tirelessly to protect and preserve the river and its surrounding communities.

Living River is published by Braided River, the conservation imprint of Mountaineers Books. Don't miss your chance to hear from one of the most talented and passionate voices in conservation photography today.
